Waterfalls in Mt Paektu area

In the area of Mt Paektu, there are waterfalls constituting hydrological and geological relics.

Typical examples include Sagimun, Paektu, Hyongje and Rimyongsu falls.

Sagimun Falls are a three-tiered waterfall rising from Lake Chon.

Paektu Falls were formed as rhyolitic lava that erupted from the Mt Paektu volcano on several occasions flowed down the valley.

Hyongje Falls also rising from Lake Chon consist of two waterfalls falling along both sides of the bedrock.

Rimyongsu Falls are a distinctive underground waterfall which is formed as water comes out from between the layers of basalt which was spouted in the Mt Paektu area on several occasions. They flow down from the unconformity of basalts. They gush out at the speed of 0.8 cubic metres per second and do not freeze even in winter.
