Typical volcanoes distributed in Mt Paektu area

There are Mt Kanbaek volcano, Mudu Peak extinct volcano, Soyonji Peak extinct volcano, Pegae Peak volcano and others formed by volcanic eruptions in the area of Mt Paektu. All of them are geological relics showcasing unusual geological phenomena in the area.

Mt Kanbaek is a volcano 2 162 metres above sea level which was formed by five not-so-big eruptions. What is noteworthy in Mt Kanbaek volcano is that there appeared a gentle slope in the north, but a steep valley on the opposite side by eruptions. The Paengmorae River flows down the northern valley, while the Sobaek Stream flows down the southern valley.

The Mudu Peak extinct volcanic body is a parasitic volcano of Mt Paektu volcano. It is 1 930 metres above sea level. Mudu Peak has an asymmetrical shape as pumice stones were piled up by the wind on the southern and western slopes of the cinder volcanic cone formed through a weak explosive eruption. Its name is derived from the fact that it had no top part owing to the wind. The peak is covered with large amounts of pumice stones mixed with volcanic bombs. You can see volcanic gas come out from a spot in the peak.

There is another parasitic volcano, the Soyonji Peak extinct volcanic body, southeast of Mt Paektu volcano. A crater is preserved intact on the top of the body 2 114 metres above sea level, and snow and ice can be seen in the valley even in midsummer.

The Pegae Peak volcanic body is a volcano consisting of three basaltic lava bodies formed by the eruption of basaltic magma. They are 1 621 metres above sea level.
