Rimyongsu Falls

June 4, 2024

Rimyongsu Falls are located in Rimyongsu-dong in Samjiyon, Ryanggang Province.

Rising from Lake Chon on Mt Paektu, the falls are a rare waterfall. Ground water from several interruptions of the basalt that erupted between the late Neogene and the early Quaternary slides down a cliff and hits rocks to throw up sprays of droplets before forming several streams.

The waterfall is 15m high and 27m wide, spouts 0.8 cubic metres of water per second and consists of nine main streams.

It spouts the same quantity of water whose temperature is 4℃ all the year round.

It looks like a giant ice wall in winter. But if you take a closer look at it, you will see some streams flowing and water running down between icicles. The most spectacular thing is that the surrounding forest area turns into a hoarfrost forest as mist rises from underground water that contacts cold air.

The waterfall was registered as a national natural monument in January 1980 and is under good protection.
