Nepal concentrates efforts on economic development

May 15, 2024

Nepal is an inland country which is located in the southern slope of the Himalayas in the south of Asia.

It has over 20 mountains which are over 7 000 metres above sea level including 8 848-metre-high Everest and more than 1 000 mountains that are over 6 000 metres.

As there are many steep mountains, there was a big hindrance to the development of transport in the past. In mountainous areas, the Nepalese people used such animals as cattle and camels as a means of transport.

But in recent years, they have renovated their roads to actively develop the country’s traffic.

At present, Nepal is directing big efforts to economic development with an eye to building a more stabilized and developed country.

Tourism serves as the major source of state revenue. The country is widely known as a mountain-climbing destination since it has the world’s highest peak of Everest.

Agriculture and animal husbandry take an important share in the economy.

Main crops include rice, wheat, maize, barley, buckwheat, cotton, jute, etc.

In order to boost agricultural production, the Nepalese government has taken a measure to enable all agricultural producers to have access to sci-tech services, and carried on a plan for modernizing the agricultural sector.

Nepal’s industry focuses on cement production, leather tanning and power production as well as carpet production.

The government has channelled great efforts into the development of IT and air transport and environment protection.

It aims to ensure the production of most of the electric power of the country by means of renewable energy sources like water and sunlight by 2030.

Nepal promotes friendly and cooperative ties with all the countries, especially neighbouring countries, on the principle of equality, sovereignty and non-alignment and strives to ensure regional peace and stability.

May 15 this year is the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the DPRK and Nepal.
