Institute breeds new varieties of plants with good ornamental effect

Researchers of the Pyongyang Turf Institute have recently bred several varieties of ornamental plants which are suitable for the climate and natural features of the country, have high ornamental value and are full of vitality, opening up prospects for landscaping and gardening in a diversified way and a more distinctive style.

Green sheep’s fescue “Unrok” forms a round shape as its thin leaves grow thickly. It likes sunlight and grows well on half-shaded places or barren soil. It looks fine if it is planted in open spaces of green belts and flower gardens and around rocks. 

Pearl millet “Rokkusul” has high ornamental effect as the whole long leaf droops to form a round shape of plant and ciliary brown catkin blooms for a long time from late summer to late autumn.

As it has strong resistance to high temperature and blights, a very wide range of adaptation and high ornamental value and remains green over one month longer than wild pearl millet, it can be used for landscaping and as a ground-cover plant to protect land.   

“Pink wild rye” gives people special emotion as its silvery spike with pink plume is blown off by the wind in June and July.

Besides, catnip with blue flower, which has good ornamental effect with a long flowering period and grows fast, and ribbon grass “White wave” with white strips on band-shaped leaf were also registered as national varieties to contribute to landscaping.

The new varieties were registered as national ones and sent to all parts of the country to be widely used for landscaping, environmental protection and land management.
