After setting a goal of reducing the traffic accident rate by half by 2025, the Indian government is taking measures to this end. 

It set the period between January 11 and 17 as the traffic safety week and conducted activities to raise public awareness of traffic safety rules on a wide scale. 

Traffic accidents caused by drivers’ violation of safety rules such as overloading and speeding happen frequently in India. 

Nearly half a million traffic accidents are reported in the country every year, killing about 150 000 people.
