Tradition of great national unity established in flames of anti-Japanese war

Whether the historic cause of Korea’s liberation would be achieved hinged on whether the whole nation would be united as one to fight against the Japanese imperialists during their military rule.

Kim Il Sung who embarked on the revolutionary struggle in his early years put forward an idea that a successful Korean revolution required the awakening and rallying of all the patriotic forces to arouse them to the anti-Japanese struggle and proposed organizing a standing anti-Japanese national united front body at the historic meeting at Nanhutou which was held between February 27 and March 3 in 1936.

On the march towards Donggang after the Nanhutou meeting, he formulated the programme, rules and inaugural declaration of the Association for the Restoration of the Fatherland, the standing united front body, despite the harsh situation of continuously fighting battles with the enemy, as he put great efforts into preparations for the inauguration of the ARF.

The inaugural meeting of the ARF was held in Donggang of Fusong County in China in May 1936.

The inaugural declaration specified the main tasks for the whole nation to unite as one and turn out in the anti-Japanese war in order to overthrow Japanese imperialist colonial rule and achieve the cause of Korea’s liberation and to establish a prosperous democratic, sovereign and independent state.

The ARF which combined the united front body and the nation’s desire for unity into one was just the banner of national liberation for the Korean people.

Its organizations rapidly expanded into workers, peasants and all other sections of the Korean people transcending differences in political view, religious creed, property status and learning, and it had its special members even in the police and other organs of the enemy.

The Japanese imperialists cried out in consternation that well over a hundred anti-Japanese underground organizations were detected in Korea with their members numbering more than 500 000. This shows how powerful the anti-Japanese national united front was.

The ARF rendered positive assistance to the military activities of the Korean People’s Revolutionary Army and played a huge role in arousing the Koreans to the struggle for national liberation against Japan.

The truth that revolution is precisely unity and unity results in victory was proved during the anti-Japanese revolutionary struggle and the Korean people cherish it as a precious revolutionary legacy.

Today, they are determined to achieve the ultimate victory of the socialist cause on the strength of single-hearted unity by carrying forward the invaluable inheritance.
