Russian president ratifies renewed nuclear doctrine
November 23, 2024Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on ratifying a renewed nuclear doctrine, the basis of the state policy for the field of nuclear deterrence.
The decree was announced on November 19.
Thus the categories of state and military alliances, targets of nuclear deterrent, have expanded and the doctrine has been supplemented with a list of military threats to be neutralized.
In accordance with the decree, an act of aggression committed by any non-nuclear state with the involvement of or support by a nuclear weapons state is to be regarded as a joint attack by these countries against Russia.
The doctrine also stipulates that nuclear response from Russia will be possible in case its existence is seriously threatened even if it is an attack carried out by conventional weapons, in case Belarus, which is in alliance with Russia, is under attack and in case its border is violated by extensive use of various aircraft, including warplane, cruise missile and drone.
